Is it better to learn by ourselves or to have a teacher?

In this essay I shall try to attempt the following topic: is it better to learn by ourselves or to have a teacher? Firstly, I will give arguments to support my opinion. Then, I will state the opposing view and I will also try to demonstrate why that view is not important or true. Finally, I will reach a conclusion which summarizes all that has been said during this argumentative essay.

As a future teacher, I entirely agree with the idea of having a teacher; this person is specialized in a specific field, which is education, that gives you the opportunity to ask him/her all the questions you can have. Moreover, a person who has studied educational methodology is completely able to explain to a student any concept in a didactic way by using teaching material. Consequently, the process of learning is less tedious than studying on your own. A further argument in favour of having a teacher is that in a classroom you can socialize with other students, not only to have fun or make friends but also to compare, to discuss, and to share all the content that you are learning. For instance, if you discuss with a classmate about why your answer is correct and not wrong, it will be easier for you to memorize all that content that you have been explaining afterwards.

As a matter of fact, paying for a teacher, in some cases, is a strong motivation. Many people complain about their inability to learn a language on their own; to cope with this, people normally tend to hire a teacher in order to become more motivated to study and learn the target language.

According to some economists at Harvard and Columbia universities, ‘’the best way of earning money is to have a good teacher’’ (2012, January 11). The Value Of Teachers. The New York Times, pp. A27. Considering this, it is a fact that if a teacher is helping a student, this person will be more likely to pass a test than a person who studies on his own.

However, not everyone thinks the same. Many people argue that they prefer having a more flexible schedule rather than attending classes in a given time so that they can spend the time they think is appropriate in their learning; nevertheless, as aforementioned, the motivation or the willpower will decrease in some cases making this person spend less time in his learning than he will spend with a teacher.

Another point in favour of learning on your own is that if you are an introverted person you might prefer staying at home alone due to the fact that you will be more comfortable. One objection to this argument is that if you stay at home you will not be able to practice all the things you have learned with other people. For example, if a student does not practice her oral skills in English, she might fail in an oral exam.

Even though people usually like attending courses, others are reluctant to do this; in other words, they say they are not used to some teaching methodologies. Moreover, some others complain about the fact that they cannot follow the dynamic of a class because they get distracted easily or they need more time to understand what the teacher is explaining. An objection to this argument is that a teacher is a person who is willing to help you and if you have any problems you should tell the teacher in order for them to help you solve them instead of just ignoring them.

On the whole, there is no doubt that having a teacher is the best option to learn; however, there are some aspects of the personality of a person that might influence one’s choice, such as being an introverted person. It is important to point out that teachers will do all their best to adapt your needs to a classroom and to help you and that is the reason why people should rely more on the value of teachers. As a result, your efficiency in terms of learning will be better; a teacher is a person who helps you to save time, money, and also to achieve objectives which you have never though you could reach, so why do we not start to rely more on them in order to have a better life?
